Cities across the Americas compete for the best talent, offering tempting combinations of lifestyle, amenities, and growth potential, while struggling to maintain affordability and quality of life for existing and new residents alike. Tech industry and real-estate market trends have converged on Austin, where a strong educational base has made it one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, with a population of nearly 1 million. And yet, snarled traffic and high housing prices have accompanied the boom of the last few decades, epitomizing the “growing pains” faced by many cities. Questions city-makers are asking here echo elsewhere, and will be focal points of the 2026 Americas Conference:

  • How to manage growth, increasing density without sacrificing the unique characteristics and small businesses that drew people to the city in the first place?
  • What is the right allocation of resources to public transportation in a city rapidly transitioning from low-rise sprawl, but which is accustomed to historically low taxes?
  • What is an appropriate architectural vernacular for high-rise and high-density development, when this is a relatively new phenomenon?
  • What will the effect of “smart city” technologies, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and other cutting-edge developments be on dynamic, changing cities?
